No Notice Expired Policy


My mother recently passed away at the age of 90.

In 1982 my mother purchased a life insurance policy written by Stonebridge Life Insurance . She faithfully made the premium payments on a policy that would pay out $2,500 at the time of her death. I think she assumed this amount would cover her final expenses and perhaps it would have in 1982.

My mother moved to an assisted living facility in 2002. In 2003 she changed the beneficiary on her life insurance policy written by Stonebridge Life.

At some point in time Stonebridge Life informed my mother that the cash value of her policy would make premium payments on her policy and therefore she did not need to mail in her premiums.

No further contact was made between my mom and Stonebridge Life Insurance.

Upon my mother's death which occured January 8, 2010, I contacted the Customer Service Department of StoneBridge Life Insurance Co. After a considerable amount of time spent on hold, I was informed that my mother's life insurance policy had "expired" in September of 2009. When I inquired as to whether she was mailed a notice or otherwise notified, I was told "we do not have to notify you" and no payment would be made to cover my mother's final expense.

Obviously had we been notified of the policy's impending expiration we would have gladly made any necessary premium payments to keep the policy in effect.

I feel cheated by Stonebridge Insurance Company and would STRONGLY urge anyone considering doing business with this company to reconsider based on my experience.

My mother was very proud of the fact that she bought and paid for an insurance policy that would cover her final expenses. We were treated with no sensitivity. This company epitomizes corporate greed.

Yes I told them and I am going to. Butch got home and they hit cancel when his fax started going thru. It only accepted the cover page and the first page, then went to cancel. They must have turned the fax machine off on him. We had plenty of time to do it, they just rudely turned it off. Now they can say we did not fax it to them.

They did this to my mother but it was only 2 months before she passed and the month prior she was in ICU No notification that they canceled due to non payment but yet they sent all the other policy premiums out she had except death benefits. They then said my mom called in. I asked when yeah the time when she was in ICU with throat and lung cancer. Sure she called in... YEAH RIGHT. Then they said a Kathy called in we do not know a Kathy. Then they had the wrong address. They never called, emailed or sent a letter to us about the non payment that was made by credit card for years. Did tell us anything. We are filing a lawsuit and also to the insurance commissioner.

my mother also had a policy with this company. She passed 02 /10 . when the funeral home inquired they said the policy had cancelled. well i happened to find a letter in my mothers belonging that she recieved from them in 07 that said the policy would be in force until may 2010 due to the fact they were using money she paid into the premiums to keep the policy in force. When i read this letter to the person at stonebridge then and only then did they agree to send me a claim form . So please investigate this further because it doesn't seem they will volunteer this info to you.
Good Luck to you, btw my mothers policy was also for 2500. she paid on for several years.

Wow. I will be more diligent with my own Life Insurance although I am not going through Stonebridge (ie. not be passive)... thanks for bringing this to my attention!
